Our deepest THANK YOU for making the Entomology events of last week happen! To all those that helped and were able to attend the 2017 E. Paul Catts events the committee wishes to thank you as we could not make this happen without you. In particular we would like to recognize Dr.’s Vince Hebert, Lynell Tanigoshi, and John Brown for allowing us to add them to this year’s recognition – often our faculty are hid from acknowledgement and we appreciate these three for allowing us include them and for their attendance! Not to forget those that were unable to attend in person, it was a fantastic night a remembrance only possible by having those in attendance add their stories, thank you for making the trip Dr.’s Beers, Jones, Felsot and Dana Catts. We especially appreciate our guest alumni speaker Dr. Mark Brown. Without the assistance of the Entomology staff it would not have been quite as successful, and finally thank you to all of those in Pullman and the graduate students near and far who were able to make the week’s events. We do this for you!

A memorial service for Wyatt Cone was held on Saturday, April 22nd at the Methodist Church in Prosser. Entomology Department members attending were: Steve Sheppard, John Brown, Dory Lohrey-Birch, Betsy Beers, Doug and Kiki Walsh.
Entomology Department grant awardees:
- Elizabeth Beers is the recipient of a grant from the Oregon Sweet Cherry Commission in the amount of $14,483. The grant is for the study of Strategies to Reduce Postharvest Splitting of Cherries (4/19)
- Doug Walsh is the recipient of a grant from USDA/ARS in the amount of $33,000 for the acquisition of goods and services. (4/11)
- Steve Sheppard is the recipient of a grant from the Thurber Research fund in the amount of $40,000 for honey bee research. (4/11)
Instructions for Principal Investigators and Laboratory Leaders:
The attached spreadsheet contains partial laboratory safety information gathered in 2016.
- Review the attached most recent Lab Safety Commitment Memo, the Laboratory Safety Commitment form, and the CAHNRS Lab Safety Spreadsheet. Mt. Vernon, Prosser, Puyallup and Wenatchee spreadsheets are also attached.
- Evaluate your lab(s) using the criteria listed on the 2016 Laboratory Safety Commitment form and address any issues. Complete, sign and post the form in your lab.
- Complete and/or update your department’s portion of attached spreadsheet with the current status of your posted lab safety commitments, and progress towards each lab safety focus area. Create new rows to add a lab not currently listed. Update incorrect information and complete missing information for your labs, including Yes/No questions, PI and lab contact information, OK/notOK info, etc.
- The OK/notOK information was gathered in 2016 for your lab. Be sure to update this information based upon whether your lab meets the criteria listed in the Lab Safety Commitment form. If you have a notOK listed and cannot resolve the issues preventing an OK status, report the specific barriers to success in the Comments column on the spreadsheet. The focus is on updating (or completing if you haven’t yet) your Laboratory Safety Commitment form and posting it.
- Return the spreadsheet and a copy of your completed and signed Laboratory Safety Commitment form to your Department Administrative Manager and cc: firstname.lastname@example.org no later than May 19.

The Spring Commencement for us will be on Saturday, May 6, 2017, 8:00 AM, at Beasley Coliseum. At this ceremony CAHNRS, Engineering & Architecture, Vet Med graduates and the ROTC Commissioning. For PhD graduates there will be hooding practice at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 5th for doctoral students and hooding faculty at Beasley Coliseum, main floor, use the SE tunnel entrance facing the baseball field to come directly down on to the staging area. A taskforce to investigate the extent to which WSU-Pullman Students are food insecure is in progress. To that purpose, we have created an online survey to assess the need. Food Insecurity survey: Understanding that some students might face food insecurity while attending Washington State University and its implications to student’s academic performance, the Division of Student Affairs is conducting a food insecurity survey. The purpose of the survey is as follows:
- Investigate the extent to which WSU Pullman students are food insecure
- Assess the effectiveness of existing resources to address food insecurity on-campus
- Propose changes to existing resources and Develop a more sustainable way to support students who are food insecure
Your participation in the online survey is completely anonymous, voluntary, and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, you will have the option to opt in to participate in a 30 minute personal interview (by phone, skype or in person) to discuss how lacking proper access to food has impacted you academically. You can choose to terminate your participation at any point during the personal interview, however, once you have submitted your survey responses online, they will be considered in the project. At no point, your identity will be associated with your responses.
In order to participate in this survey, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be an undergraduate or graduate student at Washington State University, Pullman Campus
- In the last 12 months, be enrolled in at least full-time (6 credits).
