Seminars & Colloquium

The next Fall Entomology Colloquium will be on Monday, September 11, 2017 beginning at 2:10 in FSHN 354.  Our speaker will be Daniel Ballhorn of Portland State University.  The title of his presentation is “The effects of microbial plant symbionts on herbivores and higher trophic levels.”  To learn more about Dr. Ballhorn go to: http://www.danielballhorn.com/people/.  The AMS dial # for this and all colloquium presentations this semester is 5706116.  Due to the Labor Day Holiday there will be no presentation September 4th

Department Announcements

Our very own Rachel Olsen was featured in a Sept 1, 2017, Daily Evergreen article about her adventures as a member of the “Palouse River Rollers” roller derby team. Attached is a copy of the article.  Bonnie Jean Ohler (MS 2010 advised by Zack and Landolt) is also a roller derby enthusiast who is a member of the Madison, WI, “Dairyland Dolls.”  Bonnie and her team are participating in a tournament in Seattle this weekend.  Bonnie is a currently a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the Christelle Guedot Lab.

CAHNRS Announcements

Nominations for 2017-18 faculty awards are being accepted through September 29th.  See the attached memo for the call and the awards available. Also, please let me know who is being nominated and for what so we can keep an inventory of the submissions to make sure CAHNRS is well represented. The GPSA is offering several events this semester as part of the Professional Development Initiative.  Dr. Laura Lavine is facilitating the first event on September 7, 2017, at 11:30 AM- 1:30 PM at the CUB L60 (Butch’s Den).  The title of her presentation is Working Together in Teams.  See the attachment for more information and at https://gradschool.wsu.edu/pdi/event/working-effectively-teams/.

Entomology Graduate Student Orientation & Training will be Friday, September 15 at starting at 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Topics that will be covered include:

  • Physical/Mental 1stAid (Bogdan Goncharuk, Health & Wellness)
  • Autoclave training (Kelly Turk) and Lab Safety (Tom Ebeling, EHS).
  • Graduate Program Orientation (Mandatory for all new students) Deb Marsh from the Johnson Hall Grad Center (JHGC)
  • Q&A with Faculty Graduate Program Coordinator to address unit operations and lab resources.

Please plan to attend, Lunch will be provided.

Prestigious Fellowships Workshops:  Applying for external fellowships and grants is an excellent way to fund your graduate education, and is also a professional development experience for many students who will be seeking academic career placement where grant funding is a necessity.  The Graduate School offers training to help students apply for a number of these prestigious fellowships. Read more about the fellowships and register for the workshops:
