Congratulations to recent Entomology Department grant awardees:

David Crowder who is the recipient of a $165,000 grant from the USDA/NIFA Foundational Program to work on the effects of tri-trophic interactions on transmission of a legume plant pathogen. (3/14/18)

Upcoming student seminars and exams

Megan Asche will be giving her MS seminar and taking her final exam on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Beginning at 12:10 PM with her seminar followed by the exam. Her thesis is titled “A Comparison of Hygienic and Flight Behavior Among Different Strains of Honey Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).” Her committee members are Steve Sheppard, David Crowder and Vince Jones. A copy of her thesis is available at the Entomology Department SharePoint site. The AMS dial # is 773087.

Alix Whitener will be giving her PhD seminar and taking her final exam on Monday, March 26, 2017, beginning with the seminar at 12:10 PM followed by her Final Exam in FSHN 164. Her thesis is titled “Behavior and Integrated Pest Management of Drosophila Suzukii (Diptera:Drosophilidae) in Washington State Sweet Cherry. Here committee members are Betsy Beers, Laura Lavine, David Crowder and Allan Felsot.

James Hepler’s PhD Preliminary Exam is scheduled for March 27, 2018 at 12:00 PM.

Upcoming Events and Deadlines

Mark your calendars to attend the E. Paul Catts Lecture events on April 19 & 20, 2018. This year’s speaker is, Dr. Rufus Isaacs. He is a faculty member in the Entomology Department at Michigan State University. The public lecture will be on Thursday, April 19, 2018, 5-6:30 PM at the 1912 Center (333 N. Jackson St, in Moscow, ID). The dinner will be at 6:30 at the Hunga Dunga Brewing Company (412 E. 3^rd St. in Moscow, ID). The 22^nd Annual Insect Cinema Cult Classic will be on Friday, April 6^th in Todd Hall Room 276, beginning at 5:30 PM. Do your kids BUG you? Join the WSU Entomology Department for the 22nd Insect Cinema Cult Classic as we showcase insects on the big screen like you’ve never seen them before! This FREE event is open to everyone and will feature the screening of two classic insect films. (Titles yet to be determined) There will also be live arthropods to view and interact with, as well as popcorn, door prizes, and a raffle.

WSU’s Entomology Graduate Student Association (EGSA) hosts this FREE annual family-friendly event with activities for all ages. Activities include: facepainting, living arthropods displays and handling, fossil making, etc. and visitors have the chance to take home a mealworm and watch it metamorphose into an adult beetle! Come learn about how insects and other arthropods impact your life while having a fun time!

Students planning to walk in one of the Pullman Spring Commencement ceremonies should attend the Grad Fair http://commencement.wsu.edu/grad-fair/ to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 21 & 22 from 8 AM to 6 PM at the Lewis Alumni Center. Student registration will open and they can pick up regalia directly at the Grad Fair. Registering to walk is different than applying to graduate and there is no fee to register to walk except to rent their academic regalia. After students register to walk they will have an RTW student indicator in their records. Off campus students can register and order regalia starting on Friday, March 23 https://commencement.wsu.edu/register-to-walk/. Registration and regalia orders for students will close on Friday, April 13^th.

Spring 2018 graduating students should plan to attend the Grad Fair on March 21^st or 22^nd (at 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM both days) at the Lewis Alumni Centre. This is where can confirm your graduate application status, register to walk in commencement, rent your cap and gown, and order any commencement related products for sale. 2018 ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTION AWARD: The Administrative Professional Advisory Council is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 11th annual Administrative Professional Contribution Award that will recognize an Administrative Professional employee’s exceptional contributions to WSU, the employee’s area or unit. Exceptional is defined as beyond the expected or required performance; or have made a unique difference; or had far-reaching, impelling or compelling impact to their work area. Nominations can highlight contributions made by the employee that address (but not limited to): productivity; innovative problem solving; positive working relationships; and/or university or community service. Washington State University College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences is hosting a Palouse Region Invasive Species and Exotic Pest Workshop on April 3, 2018 at 9:00 AM at the Ensminger Pavilion. At this workshop, we will be talking about priority pests significant to the region such as feral swine, northern pike, spotted wing drosophila, key weed species, exotic wheat pests and pathogens. The workshop is co-hosted by the Washington Invasive Species Council, and is funded by the US Department of Agriculture. Certified Pesticide Applicators and crop advisors may earn up to 5 Washington or Idaho re-certification credits (pending approval).

As I have opportunity to walk through the many and varied workplaces that make up CAHNRS, it is apparent that eye protection and poison prevention are indeed important topics.

Safety glasses, goggles, helmets, and face shields can protect employees from the hazards of flying fragments, large chips, hot sparks, and splashes, as well as particles, sand, dirt, mists, dusts, and glare. If you need eye protection, le t your supervisor know!
Some poisons may be harmful if they come into direct contact with your eyes or skin. Others may be toxic if you breathe or swallow them. Poisons can be solids, liquids, sprays and gases. You may encounter poison ivy or oak, mistake edible berries for poisonous ones, or be exposed to carbon monoxide from using gasoline or diesel powered tools, etc. A poison is anything that can harm someone if it is used in the wrong way, used by the wrong person, or used in the wrong amount. If an accident happens with chemicals, medicine or household items, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for help from a local poison expert.

The Annual Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting is in New Orleans, LA, August 5-10, 2018 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The theme of the meeting is “Extreme events, ecosystem resilience and human well-being.”

Entomological Society of America Pacific Branch Annual Meeting is in Vancouver, BC, Nov 11-15, 2018. This year’s theme is “Crossing Borders: Entomology in a Changing World.” Submissions for papers and posters will open in mid-April for the Lunch and Learns and Functions.
