The Office of International Programs and the Office of Research would like to announce the Fourth Annual International Research Travel Award application process is now open for 2016. The collaborative program will fund 3-5 International Research Travel Awards (IRTA) to WSU full-time faculty ranging from $2,000-$5,000 each. The IRTAs are being offered to assist research faculty in strengthening international collaborative linkages and to enhance significant scholarly and research impact aligned with WSU’s strategic priorities. These awards are to assist faculty in achieving tangible outcomes e.g. joint publications or research proposals. The awards are intended for research related activities that will advance the faculty member’s scholarly program. 2016 WSU President’s Award nominations are now open: Do you know an outstanding student or student group? You are invited to honor their leadership by nominating them today for the 2016 WSU President’s Award for Leadership. Student recipients are eligible to apply for the $1,000 Virginia E. Thomas scholarship, and all award recipients are honored at the annual Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction (LEAD) ceremony on April 19 at 5 p.m. Since 1996, the President’s Award has been an honor bestowed annually to students and others who advance leadership and engagement at WSU and beyond. Recipients of this prestigious award demonstrate exceptional leadership and service to the university and the community or support leadership development and engagement of WSU students. The 2016 award categories are student, student group, faculty or staff, and community organization. To select the awardees, a committee of faculty, staff and students will review applicants by considering each within the framework of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, specifically with respect to these qualities: consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, a common purpose, controversy with civility, citizenship, and change. Students must complete an application and submit two letters of recommendation for consideration. Individuals nominating students have the option of attaching a letter of recommendation when submitting their nomination. Student nominations are due February 22. Student applications and nominations for student groups, community organizations, and faculty or staff are due March 11. Global Case Competition faculty advisors needed! Wanted: Faculty from ALL WSU campuses! You are invited to be advisors to one of the 20 competing teams in this year’s Global Case Competition. Faculty advisors should be available to work with their teams between February 22 through March 7. Faculty advisors work with individual teams to facilitate teamwork, provide academic guidance and ensure that the global case solutions reflect the disciplines of all student on the team. Seeking faculty reviewers for Undergraduate Research Awards: Students are now applying for Undergraduate Research Awards, which offer scholarships for the 2016/2017 academic year to students who are doing undergraduate research at WSU, or who are planning to start research in the fall. Applications will close Monday, February 29. We are seeking faculty reviewers for these Undergraduate Research Award applications. The review period will be the first two weeks of March, and will involve a time commitment of three or four hours.
If you’ve ever wondered how the review process works, or how to increase your students’ chances of receiving an award, this would be a great opportunity. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Research at ug.research@wsu.edu if you’re interested.
REGISTER NOW: How to Create a Research Poster in PowerPoint Class. FREE CLASS: BCU staff will be offering two sessions of a one and a half hour course in “Creating a Research Poster in PowerPoint” on Monday, February 22, and Tuesday, February 23, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in ADBF 1002. This class is open to students, grad students, staff and faculty and space will be limited to 50 (with 4 wheelchair spaces). The class will include topics such as: the basics of research poster requirements; design principles; use of templates; sizing issues; good layout; backgrounds; text issues and recommendations; color; importing graphs, charts, and tables; good use of photos; how to save your poster for printing; and many other tips. We will be sharing from lessons we’ve learned from 20+ years of printing posters for WSU researchers including many common issues and problems, and tips to make your poster creation easier! Entomology Department Research Awards: March 1 will be the deadline for our 2016 “Student of the Year” and “Paper of the Year” award submissions. These two awards will be respectively supported by the Robert and Mary Lou Harwood and Howard and Hermina Hallgarth scholarship endowments. The “Student of the Year” award will be given in recognition of the student’s academic achievements and scholarly service contributions. The “Paper of the Year” be awarded in recognition an exceptional manuscript with a student as lead author. For consideration of the Paper of the Year award, the paper must be accepted for publication or has appeared in print over the 12 months preceding the March 30 application deadline. Application for this award includes an additional requirement: A copy of the manuscript, along with a copy of the letter (email) from the journal indicating the paper has been accepted for publication. There will also be two graduate fellowship research awards from the Erret Deck Fellowship. These fellowships will support expansion of a student’s research project.
Travel and Research scholarship applications will have the below three components:
- A 500 word (or less) essay from the student concisely explaining why they deserve the award. For Travel Award consideration, you might describe the significance of your presentation (is it an invited talk? is this a major national meeting? have you recently submitted or published particularly significant findings?). Are there specific plans to build ties with possible postdoc advisors or other collaborators, etc.? Travel awards can also be used to meet with collaborators outside of a national meeting; the need for this form of travel award funding should be justified. For Research Award consideration, In the case of the Deck research fellowship, the student should describe specifically what component the funds will add to their research program. In the case of the Hallgarth “Paper of the Year” award,
- The student’s updated CV.
- A 250 word (or less) memo from the major advisor describing why they feel their student is deserving of the award.

From the Registrar’s Office regarding graduation commencement ceremony: It’s getting time for students to be Applying to Graduate with the deadline for May coming up March 4th. Since this function went on-line there has been an increasingly larger amount of students that do not understand the difference between Apply to Graduate and Registering to walk in the ceremony. Many think that because they paid their $41 to Apply to Graduate they are automatically in the ceremony. But that is not the case. It is two separate functions. Last spring we had over 200 students that did not register to walk, believing they had taken care of this when they applied to graduate. Thus we hand entered all those students. Once they have applied to Graduate they must still register to walk if they plan to attend a Commencement ceremony. The on-line registration does not open up until the Grad Fair which for spring will be March 23-24 and fall it is the 3rd week of October and is then open through April or November 15th. If a student does not register we do not know they are attending the ceremony, we do not account for them in the seating and they have no name/reader card. As we move towards a scanning system (use bracelets with ID barcoding) it is going to be harder for people to attend that are not registered as we will not have any information in the data field for scanners or readers to view. I would just like to make sure the advisors share with the students the difference between Applying to Graduate and Registering to Walk in the ceremony. The Celebrating Excellence Banquet will be held on Friday, March 25, at 5:30 p.m. in Beasley Coliseum. Join your colleagues and friends for an evening of recognition honoring the many accomplishments of faculty and staff at Washington State University.
New Summer Session Class: Mbios 585 Molecular Biotechniques (lecture 2 credit, lab is 1 credit). The techniques of molecular biology have become pervasive in the biological and medical fields, as well as more diverse areas of study, such as anthropology and soil science. However, the frequent use of commercial kits and ‘cookbook’ protocols often leaves practitioners with an insufficient understanding of the basic principles to enable them to troubleshoot problems. This class represents a survey of the techniques used in molecular biology. Topics will be presented in detail, covering the biochemical processes underpinning the techniques, their typical protocols and applications, as well as how they might be applied to novel questions. Students will have certain benchmark deadlines, however they will be free to work largely at their own pace during the 12 week time block. The Graduate School has announced the 6th Annual Global Case Competition. This competition brings student’s together to develop innovative interdisciplinary solutions to complex global issues facing each of us in today’s world. Registration opens February 1, 2016. Teams of 4 to 6 students work together under a strict timeline to develop an innovative solution to the selected case. Judging the solution occurs in 2 stages. Teams present their solutions in a 2-page written solution. Expert judges evaluate each solution and the top-5 teams are selected as finalists. Each of the finalist teams presents a solution in a public forum. Judges hear each solution and pose questions to the respective teams before selecting a winner. Rigas award (presented to an outstanding doctoral candidate), the AFW Founders Award (presented to an outstanding master’s student). We will accept nominations starting now through February 12th. The final application packets are due February 19th.

Graduate students are invited to join in on a series of workshops designed for teaching and instruction. Offered by the WSU Teaching Academy and Global Campus, these workshop topics present a wide range of relevant topics:
