Our End of year potluck BBQ on Friday, April 29 at from 11:30 AM-1:00 in the area between our building and Clark Hall. Department is providing hamburgers, hotdogs, condiments, table service & beverages. We will need salads and desserts and fresh fruit platter. So we can know how many to plan for we need to have the sign-ups by Wednesday, April 27th. Please come sign up as soon as possible.

Extension pollinator video earns gold: Congratulations to Island County Extension Director Timothy Lawrence, Urban IPM Coordinator Carrie Foss, and CAHNRS Video Producer Darrell Kilgore, along with the WSU bee team, who earned the Gold Award from the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals (ANREP) for Pollination and Protecting Pollinators. This amazing 54-minute video gives in-depth information about pollinators and bees in a way that anyone can understand, explaining the importance of pollinators in relation to our food supply. Attention Grad Students: WSU CISER (Center for Interdisciplinary Statistical Education and Research) meeting with Entomology grad students will be on April 14th immediately after the BUGSS presentation and will go for about 30 minutes. This new center plans on offering Statistical Engaged Learning to faculty and graduate students who need assistance on any statistical aspects of their research. They are having a series of informal meetings (a brief presentation followed by a question/answer period) with graduate students across WSU to introduce themselves and the center and discuss how we can best serve their needs. They will meet at a later date with WSU faculty and staff.
BUGSS SEMINAR will be on Thursday, April 14th at 3:30 PM in UI Ag Sci Bldg Rm. 104. The speaker will be Matthew O’Neil, Department of Entomology, Iowa State University: “Is There a Place for Conservation (and Bees) in the Production of Annual Crops?”

- Paul Catts Memorial Lecture events will be on Thursday and Friday, April 28 & 29 – This year’s invited speaker is Dr. Ruth Hufbauer (Colorado State University). Her presentation is titled: “Small Populations in Novel Habitats: Extinction Risk, Inbreeding Depression, and Adaptation.” There will be a social hour on April 28th from 5-6 pm in CUE 518; followed by the Public Lecture at 6-7 pm in TODD 276. Dinner with the speaker will be at Banyans also on the 28th at 7-9 pm. On April 29th Dr. Hufbauer will be giving the final Entomology Department Colloquium presentation in FSHN T101 at 3-4 pm (following the departmental BBQ; Friday off-campus social information forthcoming). Plant Pathology Graduate Students Present: “Creating Sustainable Management Strategies for Thrips and Tospoviruses” by Dr. Diane Ullman on Monday, April 11 at 4:10 pm in 343 Johnson Hall. Dr. Ullman is the Associate Dean and Professor of Entomology at University of California, UC Davis, Department of Entomology and Nematology. Research questions addressed in the Ullman research program have necessitated investigations in her lab using a variety of insect vector species including thrips, aphids, leafhoppers, whiteflies, and mealybugs, within several plant virus systems – tospoviruses, citrus tristeza virus, potato leafroll virus, curlytop virus. Research approaches have varied from basic studies in the laboratory to more applied investigations in the field. The short-term goal of these investigations is to elucidate the inter-relationships of plants, plant pathogenic viruses, and their insect vectors. The long-term goal of the program is to translate advances in understanding of these relationships into technologies and methodologies that can be applied in novel strategies for preventing epidemics of insect transmitted pathogens.

Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11:59 pm is the last day undergraduate and professional students may withdraw (drop with penalty) from a class (Academic Regulation 68). In myWSU, withdrawal is called “drop with penalty.” A withdrawal will be marked as a W on the transcript.
The deadline to take a final exam/defense for a doctoral or master’s degree and graduate spring 2016 is Friday, April 22, 2016. All graduate students must submit a Final Exam Scheduling Form (by April 8) and take a final exam. This includes master’s non-thesis degree students (non-thesis exams are frequently scheduled as Ballot Meetings in many departments/programs. Motor Pool Renting Reminders: Must bring Vehicle Release Form signed by signature authority and have driver’s license on hand when picking up Motor Pool vehicles. Must have read and understand BPPM and SPPM associated with Motor Pool rentals and operation. Must notify of cancellation 24 hours in advance or rental charges still applies. If rental does not start until the next day pick up times are from 3 – 5 p.m. only. If need to pick up earlier, make Motor Pool staff aware so we get director’s ok and must leave in front of Motor Pool until rental commences.hank you for your cooperation
The WSU Apiculture Program will be offering two workshops this coming June:
The Starting right With Bees short course will be on June 17th and 18th. This 2 day course will cover bee biology, pest/disease identification, colony management, honey bee IPM, and gloveless beekeeping. The format is a combination of instruction and hands on demonstration. Bring a bee veil, whatever protective clothing you are comfortable in, and lots of questions. The cost is $125.00.
There will be 2 Rearing High Quality Queens one day workshops in different locations that will present what it takes to rear high quality queens. Basic biology and various methods of queen rearing will be presented. The workshops emphasize hands on instruction in queen rearing methods, with lecture and demonstrations. Students will be involved in various steps including: setting up cell builders, grafting, and establishing mating nuclei. Both queen right and queen-less systems will be demonstrated. Bring a bee veil and whatever protective clothing you are comfortable in. The cost for this workshop is $175.00. The Northwest Coalition of Professional Staff (NCPS) is holding their conference in Pullman on July 21-22, 2016.
Meeting Theme: L.E.A.D. for the Future – Leadership Education Advocacy Development
The keynote speaker is Representative Kevin Parker, Representative for the 6th district in the Washington State Legislature. He also teaches in the Whitworth and Gonzaga MBA program and owns the Dutch Brothers Coffee Shops. The speaker at the banquet and our closing speaker is Cyndy Stevenson. Cyndy spoke at our conference last year and we were very excited to have her back. She has enjoyed a diverse and rewarding career in healthcare, education, corporate consulting and training and human services. She believes that the college campus is the most exceptional opportunity to inspire, educate and mentor the future rainmakers of our society and globe. Cyndy has recently published a Character Education book for middle school and high school students titled, “Legacies under Construction” (AuthorHouse 2016). It embraces the very same concepts she teaches to adults as well. AIBS Launches 6th Annual Faces of Biology Photo Contest: Enter the Faces of Biology Photo Contest for your chance to win $250 and to have your photo appear on the cover of the journal BioScience. The competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), recognizes scientists who use imagery to communicate aspects of biological research to the public and policymakers. “Over the past five years, this contest has been effective at showing the public and decision-makers what the scientific process looks like,” said Dr. Robert Gropp, Interim Co-Executive Director of AIBS. “Whether it is sharing photos of biological research or enabling visits by lawmakers to research facilities, AIBS is committed to disseminating information that will guide informed decisions about matters that require biological knowledge.” The theme of the contest is “Faces of Biology.” Photographs entered into the competition must depict a person, such as a scientist, technician, or student, engaging in biological research. The research may occur outside, in a lab, at a natural history collection, at a field station, on a computer, in a classroom, or anywhere else research is done. The First Place Winner will have his/her winning photo featured on the cover of BioScience, and will receive $250 and a one year membership in AIBS, including a subscription to BioScience. The Second and Third Place Winners will have his/her winning photo printed inside the journal, and will receive a one year membership in AIBS, including a subscription to BioScience. The winning photo from the 2015 contest is featured on the cover of the March 2016 issue of BioScience. Submissions must be received by 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on 30 September 2016.
