pig-roastSave the date to attend the Welcome Back BBQ on Friday, August 26th at Kruegel Park from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.  Instead of hamburgers and sausages we will be roasting a whole pig and lamb, courtesy of the Food Science group.    Since we all work in the same building it will be nice to interact with our FSHN Building family.  There is a very nice kid’s playground, tennis courts, soccer fields and baseball field.  If you have yard games you would like to play please do bring them.  Please sign up to bring either:  salad; dessert; fruit or veggie platter; sandwich buns; sliced tomatoes; shredded cheese; or chips.  We need to have a firm number of attendees signed up by noon on Wednesday, August 24th so we have enough food.   So please come to the Entomology or Food Science Office to sign up as soon as possible.

Seeking proposals for PechaKucha presentations centered around the theme of ‘Place’.  Seeking proposals for PechaKucha presentations centered around the theme of ‘Place’.  The places in which we live, work, commute and spend our leisure time, effect us in myriad ways, both tangible and intangible. They can shape our reactions and emotions, our sense of health and safety, our ability to participate in society, and the people we can become.

Issues related to place reach across a full range of disciplines including cultural studies, geographic and environmental issues, architecture and psychology, to name only a few. Presentations should be centered around the topic of how place has determined, shaped or affected research projects to provide deeper insight into our understanding of place collectively. This event, to be held on October 20th 2016, will be an ideal opportunity for faculty at WSU to quickly share their research among their fellow colleagues in a direct and lively format centered around a common theme. See attachment for complete announcement.

SafeAssign:  WSU Faculty are encouraged to utilize SafeAssign, the tool within Blackboard that can prevent plagiarism and help teach students how to attribute sources.  The contract with Turnitin expired July 31, 2016 and WSU employees no longer have access to the program.  The Department of Academic Outreach and Innovation will host training sessions and webinars on SafeAssign in August and throughout the year. Faculty and students also have access to iThenticate, a tool used to verify originality in scholarly writing. For more about Academic Integrity at WSU please refer to the Provost’s blog of July 8.  Please email to provost.social@wsu.edu if you have questions, or would like more information.

This summer we have completed the installation of new video/AMS systems in the classroom (354) and the conference room (164).  Contact Adam if you are interested in training for the new set-up contact Adam.

Reminder that students on an assistantship need to make sure they are signed up for 10 credits (including at least 2 credits for ENTOM 700/800). The Grad School is in the midst of processing assistantships paperwork for the Fall 2015 semester.  This means that all graduate students need to be enrolled in the required 10 credits before your paperwork can be approved.  Please register for classes as soon as possible so your paperwork can be processed and so you can get paid without any delay.  If you have not done so already, let Dory know where you will be housed for the fall ’16 semester. We need to let Student Accounts know not to charge the non-Pullman students the misc  fees. To make sure you won’t be missing a paycheck the tuition and fees are due by the first day of classes, August 22, 2016.  You should also make sure you are set up form Graduate Payroll Deduction between August 8-Sept 5 via myWSU.  See the attached flyer for more info.

Help needed for ENTOM 103 labs:  Rich Zack is teaching Entomology 101 (Insects and People) and Entomology 103 (Lab) this fall and is looking for volunteers that would be willing to teach one of the lab sections this fall.  Everything is provided and you would be responsible for one lab period (2-3 hours) per week as well as some prep time.  I believe that this is a great opportunity for you as you are in charge of your lab session, you can develop professional relationships with the students in your section, you have a chance for one on one interactions and to work with students that have no entomology (and very little science) background – it is fun.  And, you will fulfill your teaching requirement.  Let Dr. Zack know if you are interested or if you have any questions at zack@wsu.edu  –  FSHN Rm 157, 335-3394.

ENTOM 549 Insect-Plant Interactions will be taught this coming semester at the University of Idaho and will be taught by Sanford Eigenbrode.  We have scheduled the departmental van to transport students to and from WSU –UI.  The van can accommodate 7 riders.  We have 4 students so a couple more can easily fit in to the van.  This cooperative class will be taught on Tuesday & Thursday from 9:30-10:45 in Ag Sci room 141.  If you have questions contact Sanford at sanforde@uidaho.edu.

Help us get the word out:  If you have announcements (i.e., awards, upcoming events) that you would like communicated to others you can do that by going to our SmartSheet Submission page at https://app.smartsheet.com/b/home.  You will also be able to find the Main Office Request(s) forms at this page.    If you have questions contact Adam at adam.williams@wsu.edu
