Department Announcements

It is the faculty and lab manager’s responsibility to get all keys returned from their temporary employees who will not be with us after May 6th.  Please make sure that your employees keys are turned in to the Entomology Office before leaving Pullman.  This will help us so that we willkey not have to use your budgets to have new keys made.

Students who will be leaving for one of the research stations, and not be returning to Pullman in the fall, need to return your keys in to the Entomology Office, make sure to remove the items in your office area, and take your trash out to the dumpster before you leave Pullman.  We don’t have the man power to clean up after other people.

Message from Dr. Sheppard: While attempting to use the corning still in FSHN 252 to produce distilled/deionized water last week, I discovered it was non-functional.  The cooling water supply for the condenser did not allow adequate flow to effectively condense the steam into water.  I am unsure how long the still was out of service – but the root cause may have been an issue with improper water cooling adjustment.  We have fixed the problem and the still is now fully operational. The output of the still is 3 liters of distilled water per hour. If you have not used this still before – please see me for a quick guide on “how to” prior to using it. I am happy to share the use of the still – but please remind any users that basic guidelines need to be followed to keep it operational.  The still is rather “analog” – and does not have the intellect to save itself, should an errant user fail to provide the cooling water adjustment – that needs to be done every time the still is used. It is important that the still is turned on and off in a specific sequence…. whereby the cooling water flow is turned on and adjusted (to 40 on the flow meter) BEFORE the heating coil is energized. To turn off the machine – turn off the heating coil first, before turning off the water.

Faculty, students and researchers are invited and encouraged to join the Department of Entomology’s ResearchGate group to help make our profile more current and relevant.  ResearchGate is a professional network for scientists and researchers and some of you are already members.  To get more information and to join our group go to:

CAHNRS Announcements

Instructions for Principal Investigators and Laboratory Leaders:

  1. Review the attached most recent Lab Safety Commitment Memo, the Laboratory Safety Commitment form, and the CAHNRS Lab Safety Spreadsheet.  Mt. Vernon, Prosser, Puyallup and Wenatchee spreadsheets are also attached.
  2. Evaluate your lab(s) using the criteria listed on the 2016 Laboratory Safety Commitment form and address any issues.  Complete, sign and post the form in your lab.
  3. Complete and/or update your department’s portion of attached spreadsheet with the current status of your posted lab safety commitments, and progress towards each lab safety focus area.  Create new rows to add a lab not currently listed.  Update incorrect information and complete missing information for your labs, including Yes/No questions, PI and lab contact information, OK/notOK info, etc.
  4. The OK/notOK information was gathered in 2016 for your lab. Be sure to update this information based upon whether your lab meets the criteria listed in the Lab Safety Commitment form.  If you have a notOK listed and cannot resolve the issues preventing an OK status, report the specific barriers to success in the Comments column on the spreadsheet.  The focus is on updating (or completing if you haven’t yet) your Laboratory Safety Commitment form and posting it.
  5. Return the spreadsheet and a copy of your completed and signed Laboratory Safety Commitment form to your Department Administrative Manager and cc: cahnrs.safety@wsu.edu no later than May 19.

Thank you for your continuing support and efforts to improve laboratory safety in CAHNRS and at WSU.
