The members of the WSU Honey Bees and Pollinators team hosted a WSU Dad’s Weekend event on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Brelsford WSU Visitor Center. Participants learned about the WSU Honey Bee Program and the Pollinator Research Facility, how and where WSU honey is produced and where the bees live. Honey is available for purchase at the visitor center. Additional event details are available at visitor.wsu.edu, visitor@wsu.edu or 509-335-4636. If you are going to Denver for the ESA meetings be sure to go cheer on our Linnaean Games and Debate teams, and participants in the new 3-minute Lightening Bug competition.

Rich Zack, Bill Turner and Sanford Eigenbrode (UI) were quoted in a front page article in the Moscow-Pullman Daily News on Saturday, October 28th. American Entomologist Seeks Cover Photos September 5, 2017—ESA’s membership magazine, American Entomologist, is seeking dynamic, beautiful, and interesting photos of  insects to appear on its cover. Photos should be of living insects, in sharp focus, and in portrait orientation. It is preferred that the insect be in a natural setting, with no human presence visible; in addition, it is preferred that the full insect to be visible in the image, with no parts cropped out. The insect or other elements of interest should not appear in the top 30 percent of the photograph, to allow space for the American Entomologist masthead. All photos must be at least 300 dpi in resolution at a width of at least 8.5 inches. Because American Entomologist is a quarterly publication and we wish to feature a variety of photographers’ work, we can only accept two photos per photographer as part of this call for photos. By submitting your photo, you agree to give ESA permission to use your image on a future cover of American Entomologist. You will not be asked to transfer copyright in your photo to ESA. ESA will not use your photo in any other way without requesting your permission for that specific use. Please submit your photos by December 1, 2017, to pubs@entsoc.org, along with a caption and photo credit information to be used if the image is published. Please include “American Entomologist call for cover photos” in your subject line or the body of your email to ensure that your photo is properly directed. Thank you for your interest in contributing the next great image for the cover of American Entomologist.

Have you gotten suspicious emails with the subject line showing USER and the first line of the message that reads “This is an Email Service Alert from Service Desk?”  If so forward it (and any other suspicious emails) on the WSU Security Operations Center at abuse@wsu.edu.  See the attachment for more information that gives some practical ways to prevent harmful emails..

November 1-31, 2017 is the open enrollment period for medical and dental plans.  This is the one time of the year you can make changes to, and enroll in certain benefits for the upcoming year. To see the medical insurance premium changes go to: https://www.hca.wa.gov/assets/pebb/50-626-2018.pdf. Wednesday, November 8th is the date for the Benefits Fair to be held in Pullman at the CUB. This will be your opportunity to talk with plan providers to help you make informed decisions about your health care benefits.  For other locations around the state go to page 6 of the attached October 2017 For Your Benefits publication.

Winter parking for state vehicles: Our state vehicles now have a dedicated parking lot to park at by the Yellow 1 lot behind the indoor practice facility. With the new parking zones further limiting options and availability near FSHN for paying employees and students we do not want to block these spots when state vehicles when they are not actively in use. Importantly, during the winter months (November through March), many parking lots around campus do not allow overnight parking to accommodate snow removal. Most of our state vehicles will need to be moved, except the departmental van and truck which receive an exception as they primarily assist with transporting students to class at U of I. However during periods where there is no courses (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break) they will also need to be moved to the dedicated state vehicle Exempt lot to allow heavy equipment the opportunity to remove snow. See the attachment for the images of dedicated state vehicle parking lot that lab vehicles need to start utilizing, and the black No Overnight Parking Sign that is now posted around campus to avoid during the next months.

Glamour’s College Women of the Year Competition // Looking For Students to Apply!
I’m an editor at Glamour and am reaching out about our annual College Women of the Year competition, and would love for you to share this information with students. A little history about our franchise: Each year for the last 61 years, Glamour has been recognizing ten outstanding students: scientists, athletes, activists, businesswomen. The one thing they have in common, aside from being in college, is that they’re incredible at what they do. We’re looking for students with strong leadership skills, who excel in extracurricular activities or athletics, and give back to their community or campus in some way. Entrants could receive $10,000, connections with leaders in their field, and a profile in a future issue. Last year was incredibly special—we connected our winners with mentors at an intimate luncheon which included guests like Robin Roberts, Martha Stewart, and Katie Couric.  Here is the link to the application. Prestigious Fellowships Workshops:  Applying for external fellowships and grants is an excellent way to fund your graduate education, and is also a professional development experience for many students who will be seeking academic career placement where grant funding is a necessity.  The Graduate School offers training to help students apply for a number of these prestigious fellowships. The Graduate School recently announced several scholarships and fellowship awards for outstanding graduate students. Full descriptions and eligibility requirements for each award are provided here:  https://gradschool.wsu.edu/scholarships-2016/   Please nominate deserving graduate students from your unit for these awards. Nominees for each scholarship should be sent directly to Alanna Ellis (acellis@wsu.edu) in the Academic Programs Office. CAHNRS deadline for nominees for all but the Graduate School Recruitment Scholarship for STEM Disciplines is Thursday, December 7, 2017.  Rich Zack, Interim Associate Dean of Academic Programs will make final selections for the college and submit nominations by the Graduate School deadline.  Nominees for The Graduate School Recruitment Scholarship for STEM Disciplines are due on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 to Alanna Ellis (acellis@wsu.edu) in the Academic Programs Office.  This is a rare opportunity to acknowledge excellence among the graduate cohort at WSU, and we are well aware that there are many extraordinary graduate students in CAHNRS.  Please review the 8 graduate student awards currently being offered by the Graduate School:

  • The Richard and Constance M. Albrecht Scholarship: Open to all active doctoral students enrolled either full- or part-time during the fall 2018 semester, in good standing who have successfully passed their preliminary examination, and have at least a 3.5 graduate GPA. Students cannot receive this award more than once.
  • Ann Chittenden Holland Master’s Thesis Award for Graduate Student Excellence: Open to all graduate students in good standing in STEM disciplines who have at least a 3.5 graduate GPA, have completed a WSU master’s thesis in the past year and are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at WSU.
  • The Charles Allen Master’s Thesis Award: Open to all graduate students in good standing in the arts, humanities and social sciences who have completed a WSU master’s thesis in the past year and are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at WSU and have at least a 3.5 graduate GPA. Students must be enrolled either full- or part-time during the fall 2018 semester. Students cannot receive this award more than once.
  • Karen P. DePauw Leadership Award: This is a fellowship, open to all doctoral students who have successfully passed their preliminary examination, and have at least a 3.5 graduate GPA. Students must be enrolled full- or part-time during the fall 2018 semester. Students cannot receive this award more than once. (Please note this award has a separate nomination process – additional details found here: https://afw.wsu.edu/awards/).
  • Arnold and Julia Greenwell Memorial Scholarship for Social Sciences and Humanities: Open to all doctoral graduate students who are conducting research/scholarship in the social sciences or humanities and have at least a 3.5 graduate GPA. Students must be enrolled full- or part-time during the fall 2018 semester. Students cannot receive this award more than once.
  • Anne and Russ Fuller Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Research/Scholarship: This is a fellowship, open to all doctoral graduate students who are conducting interdisciplinary research/scholarship and have at least a 3.5 graduate GPA. Students must be enrolled full- or part-time during the fall 2018 semester.
  • The Graduate School Recruitment Scholarship for STEM Disciplines: Open to all doctoral applicants to WSU in a STEM discipline.
  • The Graduate School Dissertation Year Fellowship: Open to all doctoral candidates in good standing with an approved dissertation proposal who have passed their preliminary exam and expect to complete and defend their dissertation during the nine-month period in which the award is offered. In addition, the candidate must be a legal Washington State resident, they must have enrolled full time prior to the fellowship period and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
