Department Announcements

Emily Wine  has  scheduled  her  M.S. seminar and final exam for Friday, February 23, 2018, beginning at 10:00 AM.  The title of her thesis is “Long-Term Population Census and Nest Site Characterization of Managed Alkali Bee Population  in Alfalfa Seed Production in South Central Washington.”  Her committee members are  Doug Walsh, Steve Sheppard, Dave Crowder

Brandon Hopkins and Waled Suliman (a postdoc in Biological Systems Engineering) are the recipients of a $10,000 award from the Honey Bee Health Coalition’s first ever Bee Nutrition Challenge.  The title of the February 9th Daily Evergreen article titled “Researchers look to save collapsing bee colonies” showcases their work on a safe food supplement for honey bees.  A copy of the article is attached.  For more information about the Honey Bee Health Coalition go to:  https://honeybeehealthcoalition.org/about-the-coalition/.  To learn more about the Challenge go to: https://honeybeehealthcoalition.org/honey-bee-health-coalition-congratulates-winners-of-nutrition-competition/.

Nick Naeger, a postdoc  in the Sheppard Lab, was awarded $7,500 in this competition for his work on “Fungal Extracts for Honey Bee Health.”

Dave Crowder is teaching a class on scientific writing with Kim Campbell. Every year there is a “round-table” where students prepare questions to ask of faculty/postdocs about writing grants and papers. This has always been a fun and informative class for the students, as they get a bit of perspective from folks other than Kim or I. We are planning on having this round table on Feb. 21st. The class is from 10:10-11:50 AM. If we can get 1-2 volunteers (postdocs or faculty) that would be willing to share insight on how you approach writing papers and grants we would be most appreciative. Please let me know if you can do this – we are set up over AMS so we can accommodate folks off campus.
