This spring, colloquium will be Mondays at noon, with the time change due to a conflict with our teaching program. There were a few late-semester cancellations that I’m working to fill, but the first half of the schedule is pasted below. I hope to have a complete schedule with talk titles posted next week. The first speaker will be Bev Gerdeman on January 22 (Jan 15 is a university holiday, MLK Day), followed by Laura Lavine and then Betsy Beers. Those first three talks are part of our plan to have several Entomology faculty give seminars each semester, with the goal of having all faculty give a presentation during the typical period a PhD student is in the department. If any students would like to take advantage of one of the open dates at the end of the schedule, please get in touch with me. AMS dial number is 772402 and will be the same for all future presentations.   The Catts speaker is Rufus Isaacs from Michigan State, and he will visit with us the week of April 16.  I’m meeting with Ed Lewis today to see if it will work to do a joint Catts event with U Idaho.

WSU Showcase call for Abstracts – Celebrating How new ideas change THE WORLD:  Leverage the power of your ideas by sharing them with WSU colleagues at the 2018 Academic Showcase and GPSA Research Exhibitions. The Professional Development Initiative (PDI) provides a range of programs, training opportunities, and resources to graduate and professional students that will help prepare them for academic and career success.  See the attachment for the complete list of spring 2018 events.

Beginning February 1st, CAHNRS will transition from the current hourly time keeping system of Timekeeper, to a centrally managed tool called Cougar Manager.  This change is precipitated by a confluence of events, which includes:

·   Washington State Initiative 1433 now prescribes the accrual of sick leave for hourly employees, necessitating changes to how hours worked are reported.

·   Flash, the technology on which the CAHNRS Timekeeper web interface was built, is being phased out of the market and will be increasingly cumbersome to enable and use for employees and supervisors.

·   Migrating to Cougar Manager will better position CAHNRS for the adoption of the new ERP.

The impact of this transition is on hourly employees, their supervisors, and the CAHNRS Business Center.  Hourly employees will have a new web interface to record their hours worked, and supervisors will have a new web interface to approve the hours worked.  One benefit of this migration is that the interface for recording and approving leave will be accessible on mobile devices, which should better facilitate approvals for busy supervisors. I will send out a follow up communication this Friday (1/5/17) with additional instructions and dates for training seminars, including online videos that you can watch on your schedule.  In the mean-time continue to use Timekeeper as normal. Reminder: Announcements moving to WSU Insider on Monday: Brenda Campbell The formal migration of the daily Announcements service to the WSU Insider begins Monday, Jan. 8. Those who have signed up for the daily Announcements email also will begin receiving the WSU Insider email. Then, at the end of a two-week transition phase, the daily Announcements service will be discontinued, replaced with the WSU Insider.  That migration is expected to be complete on Jan. 22. The new WSU Insider is an online news and information source for faculty and staff. It provides a more comprehensive focus on WSU-related news, events and opportunities for employees throughout the University system and has been in beta testing since October. The new website is formally launching Monday. It features fresh postings each morning and is updated as needed throughout the day. It also will include a daily email option similar to the Announcements service for those who want news and other information delivered directly to their inboxes.  Meanwhile, the process for submitting Announcement-style notices for publication will remain largely unchanged during this phase but updates are planned for later.
The Motor Pool reminds Departments to schedule emissions tests and annual inspections for WSU department-owned vehicles. Emissions tests are required for all 1991 to 2009 WSU vehicles.  Annual inspections need to be done on all university-owned vehicles. The University’s emergency communications alert program encompasses a robust system of assorted communication pathways including in-person contact, e-mail, phone and text messaging, an outdoor warning siren system, local alarm systems and social media. For Graduate Students

The Office of the Provost is pleased to invite you to participate in a workshop on Strategic Campaign Planning Using the Student Success Collaborative Campus Tool.  This workshop, on Jan. 18 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in CUE 518 and over AMS, will help users of the tool identify targeted campaign priorities, build a strategic, sustainable, long-term campaign plan, and understand Progress Reports to inform campaign planning. The Student Success Collaborative Campus is a predictive analytics advising system that WSU has adopted to help advisors guide students to success. Are you looking to recruit excellent scholars to your graduate program for Fall 2018? Consider nominating students for the Graduate School’s Research Assistantships for Diverse Scholars (RADS), which are intended to increase access and opportunities to graduate education for U.S. students from underrepresented/underserved communities and to increase graduate student diversity in our degree programs and Washington State University. Applications for RADS are due Friday, February 2nd, 2018 at Noon.  As an additional incentive, the Campus Visitation Program provides RADS nominees with a unique opportunity to visit WSU and meet with departments and communities on campus. The Campus Visitation Program has served as a powerful recruiting incentive for prospective WSU graduate students. Only students, who are nominated for RADS and have been admitted by the prospective department, will be eligible to participate in the Campus Visitation Program.  The campus visit will take place on the Pullman campus, March 4th- 7th, 2018.

Call for Nominations:

2018 Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus:  Nominations are being sought for the 2018 Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award.  This award, first presented in 1962, is the highest honor bestowed upon a Washington State University alumnus.  The Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award honors alumni who shall have made a truly distinguished contribution to society, or who, through personal achievement, shall have brought distinction to Washington State University. The recipient will be selected by the WSU Board of Regents based on a review of nominations and the recommendations of the Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee. The committee does not consider nominations of individuals currently holding public/political office. Posthumous nominations are not considered.
