<p>For about seven years, many Western beekeepers have been plagued by unexplained die-offs in their hives. It happened recently to Mark Emrich.</p>
<p>&#8220;I was doing great until about five weeks ago,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Then I came down and opened up the hives and I had five dead boxes of bees. That was a huge hit.&#8221;</p>
<p>He lost one third of his production on his small farm near Olympia.</p>

<h4>To bee or not to bee</h4>
<p>PULLMAN, Wash. &#8211; Six Walla Walla High School students have been busily traversing the state this spring, carrying their message to local communities to set the seeds for growth &#8211; much like the alkali bees that are the subject of their presentation and a Washington State University study.</p>
<p>The students are part of a team participating in the national FFA (Future Farmers of America) organization’s Agricultural Issues Forum, with the state contest taking place at WSU on May 10.</p>
