Bird-Mosquito Interaction

Agriculture can increase contact between mosquitoes and birds, facilitating the transmission of West Nile virus (PLoS One 8: e55006). We are studying House sparrow (Passer domesticus) responses to mosquitoes and the effects of host defenses on pathogen transmission.

Modification of the landscape by agricultural practices can affect the densities of wild birds and the composition of the bird community. We are exploring how the agricultural landscape affects the risk of pathogen transmission to crops and livestock by wild birds. (See our Farm Birds Project)
