Congratulations to Ivan Milosavljevic who successfully passed his PhD oral prelim on March 11, 2014. 

We will welcome Robert Orpet in the Fall as a new PhD student who will be working with David Crowder and Vince Jones.  He is our department’s first ARCS Fellowship student. 

Students planning to defend this semester are reminded that a draft paper copy and electronic of a copy of your thesis/dissertation must be available in the Entomology Office at least 10 days prior to the exam date. 

Students scheduled for spring 2014 exams are:

PhD Preliminary Exams are:

  • Karol Krey, March 28, 9:30 – 12:00
  • Adam Strong May 16, 2-5 PM*
  • Megan Taylor, May 9, 8:30 -11:00

Final Exams are:

  • Brandon Hopkins, PhD, April 18, 12:00 – 4:00 PM
  • Amelia Jordan, MS, April 14, 9:00 – 11:00 AM
  • Mu Qiao, MS non-thesis, March 21, 9-11:00 AM
  • Amber Vinchesi , PhD April 11, 10:00 AM-1:00 PM*

 

As a reminder for students and faculty the chronology for degree completion is:

PhD students:

  1. Program of Study (usually done at the end of the first full year of classes)
  2. Proposal  presentation
  3. Qualifying written proposal (formerly written prelim exam)
  4. Oral Prelims (must have an approved  program of study on file with the Grad School & department)
  5.  Application for degree (pay $50 fee)
  6. Schedule the final seminar and thesis/dissertation defense
  7. Arrange with the Entomology Office for room and AMS/WECN scheduling
  8. Provide a perusal  copy of the thesis to the Entomology Office  10 days prior to exam date.  One paper copy and an electronic copy.  

MS students follow steps 1, 5, 6, 7 & 8.  Non-thesis MS must provide a written project that is acceptable to their committee & Dr. Sheppard.

Thank you everyone who attended the E. Paul Catts events this week.  A special thank you to Laura Lavine for being the point person and guest escort; Adam Williams for making all the arrangements, our time-slippers Chelsea and David for their help and Doug Walsh for providing the beer and wine and Amber Vinchesi  for bringing the beer and wine to Pullman from Prosser. 

The next Colloquium speaker will be Erin Wilson Rankin, from UC Riverside.  Her talk, “Effects of omnivorous invaders on arboreal arthropods in a fragmented landscape,” is March 26 in FSHN354 at 12:10.  Erin’s research interests include invasive species and community ecology. Her research focuses on investigating species interactions and their effects on trophic dynamics and ecosystem services within the contexts of invasion biology, community ecology and evolutionary ecology.  Erin draws from ecology, behavior, molecular biology and physiology in designing experiments.  See her bio here: http://entomology.ucr.edu/faculty/Wilson.html.  Erin will be available to meet with folks at WSU on Wednesday, and at UI on Thursday morning.  If you would like to talk with her, please contact me (e.lichtenberg@wsu.edu).

The 98th Annual Meeting of the Pacific Branch of the ESA theme is “The Changing Landscape of Entomology in the Pacific Branch.”   Meetings will be held in Tucson, AZ, on April 6-9, 2014.  Register at the Marriot Univ. Park Hotel by March 17th for special rate.

The last day to schedule a final exam for May 2014 graduation is Friday, April 11, 2014 and must be submitted 10 day prior to the exam date.  The last day to take a final exam for May ’14 graduation is Friday, April 25, 2014.  Check with the Entomology Office to make sure rooms are available for the dates you want for your exam.  

If you plan to take your final exam and graduate this semester (May 2014), you must APPLY FOR GRADUATE DEGREE no later than Friday, March 7, 2014.    If you are defending later in this semester, you may not yet be thinking about this step yet, but please make sure you have applied no later than this deadline.   Failure to apply by March 7, 2014 means you will have to Apply to Graduate in the next upcoming semester, which would mean graduating in Summer 2014.
