Help needed for lab course Entomology 103 this fall semester.  Dr. Zack needs help with this a one hour lab only course that will be taught in conjunction with Entomology 101.  At this time we have nine lab sections but only 2 teaching assistants.  He is hoping that we can find a few volunteers that would be willing to teach one of the lab sections a few hours each week.  It is a pretty simple course, and should be fun.  If you are looking for some student-contact teaching, please contact Dr. Zack (zack@wsu.edu 335-3394) as soon as possible.  The two primary teaching assistants for the course are Robert Zinna and Jennifer Finitzer so you might talk to them if you have an interest.

New Graduate Students: Registration for Graduate School Orientation (for August 18) is now open. Please go to this website to register: https://gradschool.wsu.edu/.

We are planning our New Student Orientation on Friday August 28th at 11:00 AM in the Entomology conference room (164).  All new students need to attend.  Faculty, staff and current students should attend to introduce yourself and welcome our new students.  The Grad School has made some changes to their policies and procedures so it would be beneficial for all current students to attend so they are up-to-date.

The Graduate School is very pleased to announce scholarships available for graduate students for spring and fall 2016. Students must be nominated by the Dean of the college and meet the eligibility requirements of the scholarship for which they are nominated. Some scholarships include awards to several students, and range from $1,000 to $4,000 per year.  Information can be found at http://gradschool.wsu.edu/Scholarships-2016/.
Scholarships will be awarded on the strength of the required documentation, including areas such as leadership skills, research, quality of a master’s thesis, GPA and scholarly activities. Students may request nomination for any of the scholarships. We will send reminders as the nomination date nears, but in the meantime, please visit the scholarship website and begin making plans to nominate your students.

Effective this fall:  All official WSU email communication must be sent to students’ WSU email address, beginning on August 24 (the first day of fall 2015 classes). In myWSU (formerly zzusis), all students’ preferred email will be the WSU email (@wsu.edu). It is important to remind students to check their WSU email often for news and updates regarding enrollment, registration, financial aid, housing, and other University information.  Please note the changes in login procedures and the enhanced technology features added over the summer:

  • Students’ Office 365 email login has changed from first.lastname @.email.wsu.edu to NIDusername @.wsu.edu.
    – The word “email” has been dropped from the login.
    – Students’ email login is now the same as their login to myWSU.
  • Microsoft Office is available to enrolled students at no additional cost. They can download up to five copies at Office365.wsu.edu.

For assistance accessing WSU email or more information about Office365, please contact CougTech at 509–335–4357 or visit cougtech.wsu.edu.  See attached for more information.

The Office of Research is continuing to encourage feedback, input, and seek broader institutional support for the recommendations from the 120–Day Research Study, including its five Grand Challenges. The 19 major recommendations from the 120–Day Research Study, which incorporate these Grand Challenges, create the framework for the WSU research agenda over the next five years.  On September 2, in the CUB Junior Ballroom West (CUB 212), an all–campus reception will be held from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm. From 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm, the second of several town hall–styled meetings will provide opportunity for face–to–face discussions and input about the WSU Grand Challenges. The Office of the Provost, the Office of Research, and the Faculty Senate are co–sponsoring the town hall meetings.  Input from the first town hall meeting on July 1 and comments received online are currently being incorporated into the 120–Day Research Study, with Version 1.0 accessible via MyResearch.  Please RSVP by emailing or.120daystudy@wsu.edu. Town halls on the urban campuses will be arranged separately in the weeks ahead.  Please join us and encourage as many faculty, staff, and students who are available on September 2 to attend the second town hall meeting, and/or comment on the 120–Day Study online. Thank you for your engagement and support as we seek ongoing input and feedback.
