On behalf of the WSU Sheppard Bee Lab, we would like to thank you all for your participation and support!  The presentations and demonstrations were superb, the food was delish, the mead exquisite, and the camaraderie genuine.  We appreciate all the administrative support, Cougar publications, graduate students, post docs, crew members, professors and researchers, caterers, mazers and assistants. This event was a success, and definitely due to your participation. We are grateful for the collaborations. It takes a community to share the wonders of bees. We are glad you are a part of our hive community.

Congratulations

Upcoming Events and Deadlines

WSU is seeking 350 volunteers for Move-In 2018 on Saturday, August 11 & Wednesday August 15.

Moving 4,000 students into their residence Hall takes a lot of Coug Spirit.  Move-In is an exciting time for our newest Cougs and their families. Your participation is crucial during this transition, whether it’s helping students find their way around campus, moving things to their residence hall, or providing support to families. You can make the day memorable and stress-free!  Volunteers will get a free Cougar shirt provided as a uniform.  Volunteer for two shifts and you will get a hearty lunch.  As always, interested WSU faculty and staff can coordinate with their appropriate department administrator regarding scheduling. WSU Human Resource Services (HRS) has approved up to three hours of release time for move-in participation, contingent upon supervisor approval. Contact HRS with questions regarding comp time, flexing schedules, and other options.

Have You Met Safety Training Requirements?

University supervisors are responsible for providing initial safety training and periodically reviewing applicable safety procedures with their employees. The Safety Orientation Checklist may be used as a guide for this purpose.

The WSU Safety Policies and Procedures Manual lists the following general training as required. You may click on the links below to access the online versions of the training developed by WSU Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and CAHNRS Operations to assist supervisors in maintaining compliance with requirements.

General Training Topics

  • Back injury prevention and ergonomics
  • Prevention of slips and falls (included in CAHNRS Workplace Safety Overview online training)
  • Employee emergency plans
  • Fire prevention
  • Fire extinguisher operation – online training, 3 minutes (online training required annually, in-person training required every other year – contact me to arrange)
  • Use and care of personal protective equipment, as applicable
  • Office safety (see SPPM 2.78) (included in CAHNRS Workplace Safety Overview online training)
  • Asbestos awareness training – click-through online training

Specialized Training Topics

Additionally, performance of some duties require more specialized training, such as hazardous chemicals or pesticide handling, lab safety, agriculture or shop training, heat stress prevention, forklift training, etc. CAHNRS, EHS, and the Office of Research will have or will coordinate with you to provide, specialized training for these duties. Visit the EHS website or the CAHNRS Safety website for more information.

  • 1st Aid, CPR, and AED Training
  • Supervisors are responsible for making sure that personnel trained in first aid are available to provide quick and effective first aid to employees (SPPM 2.40). EHS provides the training at $45 per person if they have at least 8 participants. This is still less expensive than the rate UREC charges. I am keeping a waitlist of people that are interested and will coordinate with EHS to set up training dates as needed. Contact me at safety@wsu.edu if you are interested. EHS will need attendees to send an IRI for $45.

I am happy to assist by coordinating training – send an email to cahnrs.safety@wsu.edu with the type of training you would like, approximate dates/times and how many need training.  Take care CAHNRS, and be safe out there!   Dixie Kearney CAHNRS Operations , Cahnrs.safety
