Please plan to attend the Doctoral Examination for Matthew S. Jones. This will be on August 23, 2018, FSHN 354 (Entomology Classroom) beginning at 2:00 PM. The title of his thesis is: On-Farm Biodiversity As a Tool to Supress Foodborne Human Pathogens. Matt’s committee members are: Bill Snyder (Major Advisor), John Reganold, David Crowder and Thomas Beezer.
Congratulations to recent Entomology Department grant awardees:
- Brandon Hopkins and Waled Suliman, who are the recipients of a $24,000. Grant from the WSU Office of Research to work on the B-detox technology for saving the honey bees. (7/11/2018)
- John Stark and Anand Jayakaran who are the recipients of a $50,000 grant from Kitsap County to work in Low Impact Development Education for Builders and Developers. (7/16/2018)
- Betsy Beers is the recipient of a $125,811 grant for work on the Integrated Fruit Production for Pears. (8/1/2018)

Important Dates and Deadlines
Did you know that this Saturday, August 18th, is National Honey Bee Day?
So to celebrate sip some mead, enjoy some honey on your muffin, in your tea, or in your morning oatmeal. You’ll be glad you did.
The annual National Lentil Festival returns to the streets and parks of downtown Pullman this Friday and Saturday. The festival, co-sponsored by Washington State University, highlights the little legume of the Palouse, while also celebrating the farmers, workers and agricultural industries that make farming on the Palouse possible.
The ever-popular festival highlights many activities, including:
- More than 350 gallons of Lentil Chili, free while it lasts from 5 p.m.–8 p.m. Friday.
- Live music in Reaney Park and Spring St. all weekend.
- National Lentil Festival Parade, 11 a.m. Saturday.
- Live cooking demos in Reaney Park all day Saturday.
- A fun run.
- Tour de Lentil Bike Ride.
- 3-on-3 basketball.
- Beer and wine garden.
- Games for kids.

CAHNRS Faculty Awards Program and Call for Nominations: The Provosts Office has announced that the Faculty Awards Program for academic year 2018-19 nominations are now open. The nominations deadline is September 14, 2018.
WSU I-Corps program is currently accepting applications for its fall 2018 cohort: I-Corps is an NSF funded program that serves to train scientists and engineers the business basics that can inform their technology development efforts. The program provides both training and funding for teams to engage in a process of refining their understanding how their solution fit’s in the marketplace. The effort serves to sharpen the focus of development efforts and improves the prospects of attracting funding. In the 1.5 years the program has been running at WSU, graduates of the program have obtained over 1.2M in funding for technology development. Applications are due by September 1st.
University Announcements
CAHNRS Operations is changing the process for scheduling events in the Hulbert and Vogel laboratory spaces. The change in scheduling will not impact the scheduling of academic classes, nor their priority to the rooms. However, it does change how non-academic events will be scheduled. Graduate Student Prestigious Fellowship Workshops: Are you applying for a prestigious fellowship, such as an NSF, NIH or USDA pre-doctoral fellowship? The PDI is hosting a two-part workshop series to provide guidance in putting together a competitive application package that will improve your success in winning these external funds to support your graduate studies. University administration recently revised Executive Policy #38, which defines the university’s policy regarding intellectual property, technology transfer and commercialization. This executive policy addresses disclosure, inventorship, ownership, management and disposition of intellectual property (IP) created using university resources, which includes, without limitations, employee time and the university’s preexisting IP. The full policy can be found on the Office of Procedures, Records and Forms website.
CougarCopies gets a new name, look: More than 20 years after opening a store in the CUB, CougarCopies has changed its name to CougPrints Plus to better reflect the evolving products and services provided to the Cougar community.
In addition to full service printing and binding, CougPrints Plus offers shipping and mailing services, online poster printing, departmental copier consultation and placement, and support for CougPrints self-service student printing.
Future CougPrints Plus plans include CougarCard payment for online orders, expanded printing services for campuses outside of Pullman, and student business card ordering. CougPrints Plus is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during regular sessions and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during summer session, with online ordering available 24/7 all year long. Graduate Student Assistantship Benefits update: Dental benefits for the 2018-2019 insurance plan have increased from 80% to 90% for preventive and diagnostic care! This is for Class 1 covered treatments which include exams, cleaning, fluoride, x-rays, and sealants. Remember, your insurance coverage for the 2017-18 plan year doesn’t end until August 15, 2018, so you’re covered over the summer! If you use the Health & Wellness Services Pharmacy, please don’t forget to fill your prescriptions before you leave for the summer. Email student.insurance@wsu.edu with any questions.
