If you are wanting to ship anything on dry ice via FedEx you will need to have them to me at the Food Science Office (room 106) no later than 9:30 AM so that I can do my paperwork, and Hazardous Shipping can pick it up by 10:00 AM to do their paperwork, finish packaging the containers and get them to the pick-up point.  This is in effect until sometime the first week of January 2017.


The EGSA has been working onegsa-calendar-fundraiser a desk calendar as a fundraiser. EGSA has been working on a desk calendar as a fundraiser for our group. The calendar features graduate students and professors photographs, in a clean, informative way, and is acceptable for both academic audiences and the broader community.  If possible, we would like to advertise the sale of this calendar starting this week on Friday (12/9), and continuing through the end of January 2017. I’ve attached the front cover to give people a taste of what they would receive. The cost will be $10, and anyone that is interested can contact Abigail Cohen at: We hope that these will make nice gifts for anyone looking for a small present for friends or family, or a nice treat for yourself if you’d like an interesting display of beneficial insects and spiders year-round!

Fall 2016 Course Evaluations for all campus based courses are now open for your students.  They will close on Friday, December 16, 2016. Important: Students will access course evaluations through their myWSU Student Dashboard at:

  1. Students will login using their WSU network ID and password.
  2. Once logged in, they will see a link to their appropriate course evaluation(s).

We request that you do your very best to encourage students to participate in the course evaluation process.  Return rates are always a challenge so here are some way to enroll your students into participating in this important process.

  • Remind students more than once the course evaluations are open.
  • Explain to students how you have used student feedback in the past to improve your class.
  • Explain how course evaluations are used during the annual review process to monitor the quality of teaching.
  • Allow students to access their smartphones and/or computer for 15 minutes during lecture to complete the assessment.
  • Offer extra credit for completing the process (even 5 points will make a difference to students).

Instructors will be able to view a list of students who have completed the evaluation through your myWSU account on December 17.


The call for nominations for the 2017 Experiment Station Section Award for Excellence in Multistate Research is open.  The deadline is January 12 at 5 pm to This is the ninth year of the award program and, as in past years, the intent of this award is to publicly recognize the high quality science being conducted through the Hatch Multistate Research Program and the impacts of that science on society.  In addition, it is intended to increase the visibility of the program within the higher education community with a formal presentation at the annual APLU meeting and notification of decision makers in Washington through news releases announcing the award winners.
Nominations for the 2017 award will be made through the five regional SAES associations (NCRA, NERA, SAAESD, WAAESD, and ARD).  WSU is a member of the Western Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors (WAAESD).  Any approved multistate project is eligible for the award.  Please submit your nominations to Laura Lavine, with a one page or less proposal detailing why this multistate project deserves the award by 5 pm on January 12, 2017.  Jim Moyer will review the proposals and submit only one from WSU to WAAESD.

Each association will submit one nomination to be considered for the national award.  The regional nominations will be reviewed by the ESCOP Science and Technology Committee.  This Committee will make a recommendation for the national winner to the ESCOP Executive Committee who will make the final selection.  The winning project will receive $15,000 from the Hatch Multistate Research Funds. Do you think the project you are a member of deserves recognition and that will serve as an excellent example of the quality of research performed by the Land Grant system? Several hard-to-award scholarships are available for academic year 2017-18.  If you fit the criteria please apply by filling out the general WSU Scholarship application by January 31 at and also e-mail Britta Nitcy at with your name and the scholarship(s) you fit and she’ll watch for your name in the applications.

The de Weerd Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Potato Research is for a graduate student who will be studying potatoes in the areas of plant science, plant pathology, economics, or marketing.

Lindahl Memorial Scholarship: For those full-time undergraduate and graduate students who will be working in a course of study relating to wheat research/grains.

  1. C. McCroskey Scholarship: For a graduate student studying some problem connected with agriculture in the Palouse.

Rockie Family Scholarship: For students studying appropriate, nutritious and appealing food for hospitals and convalescent/nursing homes.

John and Maggie McDougell Scholarship: For a junior or senior studying agriculture who is planning to return to farming as a career.

Everett and Helen Kreizinger Scholarship: For graduate students planning to go into agricultural extension education

Tree Fruit mini-Symposium Post-Harvest Systems: Needs and Opportunities for Future Research.  Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016, 9-10:45 AM, at WSU TFREC 1100 N. The Office of Emergency Management and Environmental Health & Safety sent an email out last month that said that all laboratories must have a power outage plan.  Power outages impact WSU buildings differently, based upon the back-up power systems available and the cause of the outage. In general, only the life-safety systems within a building, e.g. emergency lighting, exit signs, fire sprinkler systems, are assured emergency power. Back-up power to almost all other building systems is subject to the availability of limited back-up/emergency generator capacity. Do not assume your building has back-up power, even buildings or building systems with emergency generators may be subject to outages if the generator is down. Emergency power may not be immediately available. See the attachment for the complete email that outlines what systems are impacted by power outages and recommendations.

WSU’s Environmental Health and Safety Office has instituted a Mandatory Laboratory Signage Program to be in compliance with Washington State’s Hazard Communication (Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Rule, WA Administrative Code (WAC) Ch. 296-901.  The purpose of this program is an effort to improve worker protection, emergency response and security for labs using a laboratory notification and warning sign.  A copy of the WAC and WSU Policy pertaining to this program are attached.  We have been asked to be in compliance by the end of October 2016. Each Principal Investigator is responsible for making sure that their labs are in compliance with this program and can create the appropriate signs for their labs.   On September 23, 2016, an email went out to all faculty, lab managers, staff regarding the WSU Laboratory Signage Program with a deadline to have this done by the October 28th.  Subsequent notices were in the October newsletters.  Please let Dory and/or Adam know when you have completed this project in your lab.  In case you forgot a copy of the email with instructions is attached.

Washington State Commission on Pesticide Registration has released the call for 2017 Request Proposals.

Proposals will be presented at the December 13 and 14, 2016 meeting in Ellensburg. See attachment for more details and application form.

Effective January 2017, pesticide handlers and workers must be trained on an annual basis and training records must be kept. This is a big change from previous training intervals. For those who wish a copy of the new rules, you’ll find it here:  and the summary or new rules starts on page 67502.  Please make sure you review your training calendars, recordkeeping and content in order to be in compliance by January 1, 2017. The Northwest Scientific Association announced that proposals for the 2017 Student Research Grants are due January 16, 2017.  The theme for the 88th NWSA conference is Understanding & Managing Diversity: From the Landscape to the Gene.  This year’s conference will be held on the campus of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon on March 29-April 1, 2017.  Abstracts for oral or poster presentations are due February 16, 2017.  For more information about NWSA visit their website at:
