Department Announcements

Faculty should plan to attend the Entomology Department All Faculty Meeting on August 3rd and 4th

We just received word that our own Carol Black will receive this year’s Distinguished Achievement Award in Extension from the Entomological Society of America.  Please join us in congratulating Carol for her outstanding work.

Recognition of her contribution to the profession reflects well on her abilities and dedication. Of course… it is also represents a win for her team, our department, CAHNRS and Washington State University. She will be presented with her award at the November ESA Annual Meeting in Denver, CO.

There will be a Pesticide Registration Workshop on November 8, 2017 in Puyullap at the Allmendinger Center.

In celebration of Howard Hallgarth’s 95th birthday a special one-time only scholarship was made available to Entomology students.  Applicants wrote an essay, a resume and the purpose for which they will use the funds. Join the Entomology Scholarship Committee in congratulating awardees Megan Asche, Eli Bloom, Adekunle Adesanya and Alix Whitener.

BBQ2The Entomology Dept/School of Food Science Back to School BBQ will be on Friday, August 25th, Sunnyside Park.  Please plan to bring a salad, dessert, fruit or veggie try. The sign-up sheet will be in the Entomology and Food Science offices.  We will need to have a firm count by Monday August 21.  If you have any yard games please feel free to bring it.  The park has a playground, disc golf, tennis courts, a small baseball field and a horse shoe pit.  So there will be plenty to do there.

 

Course Announcements:

A new for Fall 2017 course titled Biotechnology and the Environment.  It is cross-listed as ENTOM 460/ENVR_SCI 460.  It will be taught Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 AM-11:50 AM and is available via AMS.  The instructor is Allan Felsot.  The course number for Pullman students is: 05563.  Sections are available at the WSU Research Centers.

David Crowder will be teaching STAT 511/AFS 511 Statistical Methods for Graduate Researchers this Fall Semester.  This 4 credit course is will be taught on Tuesday and Thursday at 12-1:15 PM in Johnson Hall C107.  The course # is 09826 for the lecture and 09827 for the Lab that is taught on Wednesday at 8:10-10:00 AM.

LERRYIt is with a heavy heart that we learned of the passing of Dr. Lawrence (Lerry) Lacey, ARS (ret.). Lerry was a great colleague, internationally recognized insect pathologist, and a dear friend. Not only was he a gifted researcher, he was also a veteran of the Vietnam War. Please join us in recognizing the career and accomplishments of Dr. Lacey. Lisa G. Neven, Research Leader, USDA-ARS, Wapato, WA. Dr. Lawrence A. Lacey. September 27, 1946 – July 23, 2017.  Dr. Lawrence A. Lacey was internationally recognized for his work in insect pathology and microbial control of insect pests. He published more than 200 refereed journal articles, reviews, and book chapters in medical and agricultural entomology and insect pathology, and edited or co-edited four books, including the Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology and the Field Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate Pathology. Dr. Lacey received his master’s degree (1975) and Ph.D. (1978) in entomology at the University of California, Riverside. His first professional position was with the National Institute of Amazon Research in Manaus, Brazil. Subsequently, he worked for the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the World Health Organization, and the Vector Biology and Control Project (USAID) in the U.S., Latin America, West Africa, Europe, and several other regions of the world. His research included studies on the biology and microbial control of black flies, mosquitoes, Japanese beetle, whiteflies, and several insect pests of tree fruit and potato. He led the Japanese beetle control project on Terceira Island (Azores, Portugal), and conducted foreign exploration for natural enemies of Bemisia tabaci while based in Montpellier, France. From 1996 to 2010 Dr. Lacey worked at the USDA-ARS laboratory in Wapato, WA, where he implemented a research program in insect pathology for protection of tree fruits and potatoes. Dr. Lacey served as an officer in the Entomological Society of America (ESA) and in the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, and as subject editor, co-editor and editorial board member for ESA journals and for the Journal of Invertebrate Pathology. His honors include his induction as a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America in 2008 as well as an International Honor Award from the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service and a Public Service Award from the University of California, Riverside Alumni Association. Dr. Lacey passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 in Yakima, WA and is survived by his wife, Cindy, daughter Mariah, and sons Eric and Alex.

University Announcements

A forum on campus planning and parking will be presented by the Office of the President and the Faculty Senate, 4-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in FSHN T-101. President Kirk Schulz will host the event and will be joined by Stacy Pearson, vice president for Finance and Administration; Olivia Yang, associate vice president for Facilities Services; and John Shaheen, director of WSU Transportation Services. After brief presentations, the floor will be open for discussion. Faculty and staff are invited to present any concerns or questions about campus planning and parking on the campus. Registration for groups and departments to host tables in the All-Campus Picnic closes on Wednesday, August 9th. The All-Campus Picnic is a hallmark event of the Week of Welcome, with 5,000 students typically participating. This year’s Picnic is on Friday, August 18th at 11:00am-1:30pm on Cougar Way. This a great opportunity for departments and student organizations to share their information with the incoming class of Cougs, so please consider reserving a table if you haven’t yet done so!   The cost per table is $25 for Campus Departments, and $20 for Registered Student Organizations. Norm Ehmann Urban Pest Management Award -July 2017 RFP

Request for proposals: Researchers or educators involved with urban pest management problems which occur in the Pacific Northwest are invited to apply. Research may be conducted outside the Northwest if it involves pests that also occur in the Northwest, like bed bugs.

Purpose: This endowment was developed through donations from the Oregon and Washington Pest Management Associations, the Pacific Northwest Pest Management Conference and a variety of pest control industry suppliers. It is intended to support research and extension and/or educational activities relevant to Urban Pest Management issues.

Funding: Proposals are welcome from all Urban Pest Management researchers and extension educators, but we do expect the proposed research and training to include pests that are located in the Pacific Northwest. The amount of each grant has not been established, but we are planning for a total amount of up to $30,000 to be made available for this funding period (January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018). It is expected that one or more projects will be funded. The selection committee encourages applicants to seek matching funds from supporting agencies, such as the Washington State Commission on Pesticide Registration and the Pacific Northwest Pest Management Conference.

Evaluation and Selection Criteria: Research and Extension Proposals addressing all Urban Pest Management issues will be accepted, with priority placed on those addressing pests in the Pacific Northwest such as:

  • Odorous house ants, carpenter ants and other pestiferous ants
  • Bed bugs
  • Subterranean termites, anobiid beetles, and other wood-destroying organisms
  • Yellowjackets and other wasps
  • Arthropod pests of all stored products
  • Mosquitoes and other medically important arthropods
  • Rodents
  • Training workshops or programs for Pest Control technicians

Proposal format: Proposals are limited to 5 pages with 12-point font size and one-inch margins. Applicants should include a two-page vitae as an addendum. Rationale and Significance: Each proposal should contain a detailed description of the pest problem and its impact on the affected industry and/or stakeholders.  Deadline: Proposals will be accepted until August 31, 2017.
