Agricultural Entomology.

OBJECTIVES OF COURSE

  1. To present the fundamentals of entomology, insect structures and functions, classification, development, behavior and ecology.
  2. To instruct in recognition of the major families of beneficial and injurious insects and related arthropods.
  3. To outline and discuss methods of insect control.
  4. To provide information about the major pests of crops, livestock and man.

1 - Place of insects in animal kingdom, phylum Arthropoda, major classes of arthropods and their economic importance.
4 - External morphology and mouthparts of insects, internal anatomy and physiology of insects.
1 - Insect metamorphosis, embryonic development and immature forms.
2 - Classification and habits of insects.
3 - Insect ecology, major environmental factors and their effects, population dynamics, sampling, and economic injury levels.
9 - Methods of insect control, biological control agents, insecticides and insecticide problems, pest management concepts and principles.
5 - Major arthropod pests of crops, livestock and man, collecting and preserving insects.

GRADING CRITERIA

  • Lecture exams: 3 at 100 pts each = 300 pts
  • Lab exams: 4 at 50 pts each = 200 pts
  • Final exam = 200 pts
  • Total for course = 700 pts
  • Instructor's discretionary points of 4% of total (28 pts) to be added to your final accumulation.
