ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Reminder:  The  Entomology Annual Meeting will be August  13 – 14, 2015 in Leavenworth, WA.

New Graduate Students: Registration for Graduate School Orientation (for August 18) is now open. Please go to this website to register: https://gradschool.wsu.edu/.

We are planning on having our New Student Orientation on Friday August 28th at 11:00 AM in the Entomology conference room (164).  All new students need to attend.  Faculty, staff and current students should attend to introduce yourself and welcome our new students.  The Grad School has made some changes to their policy and procedures so it would be beneficial for all current students to attend so they are up-to-date.

Congratulations to Elizabeth D’Auria who successfully passed her MS final exam on Monday, July 27th.  Elizabeth was advised by David Crowder.

Ivan Milosavljevic’s PhD seminar and defense is set for Friday, July 31, 2015.  The seminar will be at 9:00 AM followed by the defense at 10:00 AM.  A copy of his thesis is available on the Entomology SharePoint page and a hard copy is available in the Entomology Office.  The AMS dial in # is 5703127

The Grad School is in the midst of processing assistantships paperwork for the Fall 2015 semester.  This means that all graduate students need to be enrolled in the required 10 WSU credits before your paperwork can be approved.  Please register for classes as soon as possible so your paperwork can be processed and so you can get paid without any delay.  If you have not done so already, let Dory know where you will be housed for the fall ’15 semester. We need to let Student Accounts know not to charge the non-Pullman students the misc fees.

Applications are being sought for the 2014 Norm Ehmann Urban Pest Management Awards. Researchers or educators involved with urban pest management problems that occur in the PNW are invited to apply.  Research may be conducted outside the Northwest if it involves pest that also occur in the Northwest, like bedbugs. Proposals will be accepted until August 3, 2015 and sent to Walter S. Sheppard at shepp@wsu.edu.  Applicants will be notified of the selection committee choice by October 1, 2015.  See attached for more info.

Goodbye ZZusis –  Hello my.wsu
Washington State University’s online information portal, which provides a wide array of electronic systems and services to students and staff, will be renamed “myWSU” effective Aug. 3.  The renaming of the portal, which was previously called “zzusis,” will have no effect on the systems and services provided through the portal, which will be accessed at my.wsu.edu. Those logging in to the previous zzusis.wsu.edu domain will automatically be redirected to “myWSU,” without interruption. Users will continue to log into the myWSU portal using their existing WSU network ID and password.   All WSU colleges and departments currently referencing “zzusis” in materials, publications, or on their website are expected to update those references to myWSU by the end of the year. An online toolbox has been set up at brand.wsu.edu/mywsu as a resource to provide graphics and other information useful in editing information and materials referencing the myWSU portal.  The renaming effort was first proposed by the late WSU President Elson S. Floyd, who expressed concerns that the name “zzusis,”which was used originally to describe the WSU student information system, had evolved in recent years to describe not only the student information system, but the entire online portal, including zzusis and the other services accessed through it. A committee co-chaired by Brant Schroeder and Robert Strenge, has been working with WSU employees in departments all across the university since earlier this year to help identify instances where existing references to “zzusis” in online and printed university communications will need to be changed to “myWSU.”  Schroeder said the committee has also been working with ASWSU and other student groups in planning for the name change.  Schroeder said WSU managers who have not yet been contacted by members of the transition committee, are encouraged to contact one of the two committee co-chairs with questions or concerns.  Schroeder can be reached at 509-335-0985 or at brant@wsu.edu. Strenge can be reached at 509-335-3583 or at rstrenge@wsu.edu.
